Vitamin C is vitally important for human health, and we need to consume it regularly in the diet because we are unable to synthesise it ourselves. It has a host of important biological functions in our bodies, including the following:
- It is a potent antioxidant, which means that it fights free radicals and helps to protect all cells in the body.
- It is very important for the maintenance of our skin and connective tissue. This means that it is important in conditions such as haemorrhoids, gingivitis and varicose veins, or any condition where connective tissue damage occurs.
- It helps fight high histamine levels in the body. This means that it is highly beneficial in allergies such as hayfever and allergic rhinitis, where high histamine levels are produced. An inflammatory response occurs due to increased histamine, and this increases symptoms such as mucous congestion and watery eyes, which Vit C helps to combat.
- Vitamin C is also very beneficial for the immune system. It can help to modulate our immune systems so that they are stronger and have more of the substances that fight against bacteria and virus'.
These are just a few of the ways in which it helps to increase health, and like any nutrient it is best accessed in fresh foods. Taking a supplement is fine for the short term, but the human body knows foods best. Our digestive tract innately knows how to break down foods and attain the vitamins, minerals and nutrients present.
Any of the following foods will give you a nice dose of Vitamin C:
Oranges and Tangellos
Leafy Green vegetables such as Kale
All this talk of Vitamin C has made me realise that I needed to have a dose myself, so I decided to use my new juicer and make a yummy nutrient rich drink. Mum and Dad gave me the juicer for my birthday recently, and it's Awesome! Thankyou :) I've been giving it a good work out.
Check out the goodies I used to make juice today:
The juice contained 6 oranges, 3 kiwi fruit and 4 large strawberries. It yielded 2 large glasses of juice, which Bren and I thoroughly enjoyed. Nice and sweet with a little bit of tartness. Mmmmm perfect :)
