Superfoods are vibrant and nutritionally dense foods that are now readily available in health food stores, pharmacies and organic retailers. Today’s Super Food Star is Maca!
So what’s in maca that makes it so good? The Maca root is jam packed full of goodies, including many vitamins and minerals, phytochemicals and healthy fats. It also has a high protein content. With all this nutritional benefits its little wonder that it supports energy and mood.
It is used also as a sexual tonic and for fertility and hormonal related issues because it has a potent hormone regulating effect. It can improve the libido via its energy giving effects and hormonal tonic properties.
Maca has a nutty almost caramelish flavour, and tastes really nice when added to smoothies with avocado and banana. I’ve also used it mixed with a vanilla pea protein powder, and put it into bliss balls with nuts and
dried fruits. You could mix it through muesli or yogurt as well, and put it into muffins and cakes.
It does come with a warning, and that is to be careful with your dosage when you first start taking Maca. It does have a potent effect on the body, and so its best to start off on a really small dosage. Just one capsule a day, or half a teaspoon if you are using the powdered form. If you take too much too soon it can exacerbate your symptoms, and that is never too much fun. It’s not a supplement that you need to take long term, but it can certainly be beneficial in times of need. It's also great to add to the occasional smoothie for both flavour and energy.
