There are many ways of answering this question, because a Naturopath isn't just one thing. We are primary health care practitioners, and our work aims to bring human beings back to a place of health and vitality. We do this via comprehensively viewing the whole person, their lifestyle and habits, and finding the weak links. We teach people to make these links stronger, and thus bring themselves back to robust health. Teaching people how to live better in their bodies, and live healthier lives is what makes us Naturopath's, because the knowledge we impart is the tool that people use to change their lives to health. Whilst doing this, our first rule is to do no harm to the individual.
The naturopathic medicines that we employ on the road to health include nutritional medicine, diet and lifestyle advice, herbal medicine, iridology, flower essences, celloids, homeopathy and a range of other therapies.
I hope this shed's a little light on a big topic :)
Becoming a Naturopath is a long road, and requires a 4 year intensive Bachelor of Health Sciences. Each semester we do between 7 and 9 subjects. These subjects range from Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry & General Chemistry, Pathology and Clinical diagnosis which ensure we understand the human body, to Herbal medicine, Clinical Nutrition, Food as Medicine, Iridology and Homeopathy so that we understand our Naturopathic tools. We also do Naturopathic Clinical Medicine, which brings everything together, and Pharmacology so that we can understand how pharmaceutical drugs act in the body and how our medicines interact with them, as well as a range of other subjects.
Ultimately this leads us to gaining a Bachelor of Health Science Naturopathy, which allows us entry to our governing body Australian Natural Therapist Association - http://www.australiannaturaltherapistsassociation.com.au/
Australian Naturopathic Practitioners Association -
