You've probably heard about Buckwheat, and how we should all be eating it in our diet. You've probably also been thinking 'why do I need to eat buckwheat, and what is it anyway'? Today I want to shed some light on this champion food, so you can understand both what it is, and why its so good for you! Let's go:
Hi everyone :) welcome back to our second edition of the Superfood Series!
Superfoods are vibrant and nutritionally dense foods that are now readily available in health food stores, pharmacies and organic retailers. Today’s Super Food Star is Maca!
Hello beautiful people. I’m really excited to introduce to you the new Superfoods series. You might be wondering what a Superfood is, or what I’m meaning by this term? The word Superfood has been thrown around a lot in recent years, however there are some foods that really deserve this title, and I’ll be introducing them to you one by one over the next few months. These packages of goodness have the power to really change your life for the better, and through this series I’ll explain what they are and how you can incorporate them into your daily routines.
Hello again :) I hope you have all had a happy January and recovered from the rigours of Christmas and New Years!! Today I thought I’d share with you some of the supplements that we like to take on a regular basis. The world of supplements can be confusing, and often leaves you wondering whether you really need anything, and if what you are taking is really doing anything for your body. Through experience I have found the following supplements that work for me and my body. What works for you may be different. It is always much better to get professional advice as to what supplements your body needs and how to take them, as even though some products are considered natural, they are still medicines and can still have damaging effects if you don’t know how to use them properly. The following information will explain what the supplements we do take are and what benefits they give to the body.
Grants Liquid Cholorphyll – This vibrant green drink is made from fresh alfalfa sprouts and is full of vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids. It works by encouraging your bodies elimination channels to work efficiently via the nutrients it supplies, and also helps to cleanse the body of impurities and toxic wastes. It has been referred to as ‘the internal deodorant’ for your body, and helps to energise all of your cells.
I enjoy it because it has a pleasant spearmint taste and you can just mix it in a glass of water or your drink bottle.
Lifestream Spirulina – I have tried many different spirulina’s over the past few years, and always come back to the Lifestream brand because it gives me the most energy and makes the most difference to my health. Spirulina is a little green microscopic algae type plant that grows in water, and contains one of the richest concentrations of nutrients in any plant life. This includes all essential amino acids, iron, Vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. It is natures multivitamin supplement, and because it is a naturally occurring plant the human body naturally knows what to do with it, thus absorbing much of the nutrients it offers.
This little plant can make a huge difference to your energy, immunity, the health of your skin, hair and nails and your overall sense of wellbeing. I know it does for me.
Vitamin C Powder – Melrose Calcium ascorbate powder is a non-acidic buffered vitamin C powder that is quite absorbable due to both the form of vitamin c and because it is a powder. Powders are generally more absorbable because your body does not have to digest a capsule or tablet to get to what is inside, and there are less fillers and excipients used as well.
I like to take this powder at times when I know I’m going to be extra busy, as well as when I’m feeling a little bit run down, and I like to put it in my smoothies and juices as well. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that we all need, both for the health of our immune system as well as to dampen inflammation in the body and to maintain the health of all connective tissue, skin, gums and mucous membranes. I suffer from hayfever and allergies with a runny nose and lots of sneezing at times. Vitamin C is particularly useful for me as it works to dampen your bodies histamine response, which is what causes the over production of mucous and itching in allergy responses.
Other foods and supplements I like to take on a regular basis include Chia Seeds, Acai berry powder, probiotics and magnesium powder. I’ll definitely continue this post later and explain what these guys do. To finish off today though it has to be said that a wholefoods diet and sensible exercise regime that includes time for meditation and reflection are really the cornerstones of health and wellness. Supplements can help you on this journey, but they are not the foundation and more is not always better. Until next time,

Hello everyone :) Let me introduce to you Mr. Parsley
Yes we have met him on here before, but today we are seeing him in a different light all together! That is in a smoothie!!
I can hear you all going ewwww already :) But guess what? I was so pleasantly surprised by the fresh vibrant taste of Mr.Parsley in this power smoothie, and I think you will be too. Honestly I thought it was going to be vile and disgusting, but I actually enjoy it quite a lot! The smoothie has a very fresh, invigorating, slightly sweet taste to it. That might have something to do with the maple syrup I added, but it worked a treat!
½ cup almond milk
½ cup coconut milk
1 tbs chia seeds
1 cup packed parsley
Dash of maple syrup
2 large strawberries
Handful of blueberries
1 tsp acai berry powder
1 frozen ice block of fresh squeezed lemon juice = about 2 tsp fresh
Make sure you blend all the ingredients really well. Approximately 30 seconds, and serve with some ice cubes. Slurp and enjoy, mmmmm.
This is my new favourite way to have acai berry powder. I made this smoothie 2 days in a row last week, and I honestly had so much more energy, on the second day in particularly. I'm attributing that more to the fresh parsley full of iron and antioxidants rather than the acai, but i'm all for the synergistic effect too. It was definately noticeable to me the next day when I didn't have this little super food smoothie, and that is the power of fresh wholesome food!
Do any of you guys have a green smoothie or juice that you like to make at home? Does it help you feel full of energy?
Spreading the green smoothie love :) (or in this case purple)
Hi guys :) Today I want to talk a little bit about berries. Now that might sound a bit strange, but these little fruits pack a serious nutritional punch of goodness, and they came in many varieties.
Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries Mmmm! These berries we all know, and hopefully love. These common and wonderful varieties of berry are high in antioxidants, which are compounds the human body requires every day in order to maintain a high level of health. Antioxidants in the body help to combat inflammation and oxidative damage that increase ill health, signs of ageing and our risk of developing disease. Oxidative damage occurs when free radicals build up in our bodies; this happens when we eat modern day junk foods and are exposed to chemicals via air pollution, smoking, drugs, traffic pollution etc. There is no escaping the chemical load of daily living, but we can combat it by increasing the amount of fresh antioxidant rich food sources we eat each day.
Fresh berries also contain high amounts of fibre, which we need to maintain optimal health in our digestive tracts. Vitamins C, A, folate and calcium are also found in berries, so if you weren’t a fan of the good old berry before, hopefully it’s nutritional benefits have swayed you.
Plus who could go past the amazing colours that berries give to any food you make with them! Such vibrancy is good for the soul!
Acai berries and Goji berries are varieties that aren’t quite so common, and have been dubbed ‘superfoods’. You might be wondering Why this is, and are they really superfoods?
Well I’m here to teach you what is so super about this little packets of health, and also how you can incorporate them into your diet if you so wish.
Acai berry is a super antioxidant food, packing in much more than the common variety of berry. This greatly increases it’s ability to help remove toxic waste and damaging free radicals from the body. Scientific trials have also showed that it helps dampen the inflammatory response in the human body. It also has a very high nutritional profile and therefore increases your nutritional status. The berry is very high in protein and also contains omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids. Via increasing your nutritional status, this super berry also increases your energy levels. Who doesn’t want increased energy levels right?
My personal experience of Acai berries is that when I used them to make superfood smoothies each morning for a week I felt honestly amazing in my energy levels. Compared to normal my energy skyrocketed. I found the freeze dried powder an easy and convenient way to incorporate these berries into my diet, and this post is making me want to go and buy myself some more! My energy has been quite low lately, so perhaps I can do a little self experiment and report back to you guys on how I feel after an acai fix! Let’s do it, i’m setting THE ACAI BERRY CHALLENGE for myself right now, tomorrow when I go to work i'll buy some powder and start making daily smoothies! Hehe, bit excited! Join in and try it with me if you like :)
Acai berry also comes in capsule form, but it’s always easier for your body to digest nutrients in powder form; it doesn’t have to break down the capsule and other ingredients used to make things into tablet or capsule form.
Historically Acai Berries come from the Amazon area, and essential grow on Acai Palm Trees.
You can see from this picture that they look very much like Blueberries!
Another super little berry is the Goji Berry. Historically Goji Berries have been used for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine, specifically for anti-aging, fertility and kidney toning properties. It was thought that they improved the chi, or life energy force, which still holds true to this day.
Like acai berry, Goji berry are also very high in antioxidants, with a high concentration of vitamins and minerals that is also very energy giving. This fruit is particularly high in Vitamin C, and also contains Vitamin E which is an antioxidant not commonly found in fruits.
You can buy Goji berries in dried form, and these are a great addition to porridge, yogurt, muffins, trail mixes etc. They also come in capsule form and as a powder, which is excellent to add into juices and smoothies for an extra nutrient and energy hit.
I'm off now to find a yummy smoothy recipe incorporating acai berry powder and other goodies. I'll keep you updated on what I come up with :)

Mmmm this morning Bren and I went out to T.Hooft cafe for breakfast with some friends. They seriously have the most amazing breakfast meals in Bendigo. We shared a T.Hooft total breakfast with all of the trimmings, and still couldn't finish it between the two of us.
Today I'd like to share with you Green Smoothies. They sound kinda gross, but they were introduced to me by a Naturopath who recommended them for energy and as an easy way to boost nutrient intake. They work a real treat, and also surprisingly taste quite yummy! Yes, I was pleasantly surprised the first time I tried them, and so i've kept going and now Brendan has braved the green smoothie with a happy ending too.
Let me introduce you to the first and main ingredient:
Rocket and spinach leaves. You need at least half a blender full of packed green leaves, and you can use pretty much any salad green you like: kale, spinach, rocket, different varieties of lettuce, asian greens.....
The important part is to have the blender at least 1/2 full of greens, as this is where a lot of the vitamins, minerals and energy comes from in our green glass of goodness.
Next we add the sweet ingredients.
You can add any fruit you fancy in this step. Today I chose fresh pineapple, kiwi fruit, and frozen blueberries. Another good combination is some tinned peaches with kiwi fruit and mandarin.
Once you've got your chosen fruits all chopped up and ready to go, pop them in your blender with the green leaves. On top of this put in 1 cup of filtered water, and a quarter of a cup of fruit juice if you need to make it a bit sweeter. The ratio of ingredients should roughly be 2/3 green leaves, 1/3 fruit and 1 cup filtered water.
Then just blend, slurp and enjoy :)
Today mine came out purpley brown because I added the blueberries, but usually it comes out bright green which is kinda fun.
Let me know how you guys go trying the green smoothie. I'd love to hear what combinations you come up with!
Also if you guys have any favourite smoothie recipes you'd like to share feel free to post in the comments sections below.
